What is NIL?
NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. Since February 2026, the NCAA has allowed college athletes to earn compensation for the use of their name, image, and likeness — including endorsements, social media promotions, autograph signings, and more — without losing their eligibility.
What You Can Do
- Promote products or services on social media
- Sign autographs for compensation
- Make paid appearances at events
- Create sponsored video content
- License your name or likeness to brands
- Teach training sessions or clinics
- Sell branded merchandise
What to Avoid
- Deals tied to athletic performance or enrollment decisions
- Use of school logos, trademarks, or uniforms without authorization
- Promoting gambling, alcohol, tobacco, or adult content (varies by school)
- Agreements that conflict with existing school sponsorships
- Failing to disclose deals to your school (required in many states)
School Disclosure Requirements
